Dr Gayan Padmasekara

Orthopaedic Surgeon – Shoulder and Upper Limb Surgery

Dr Gayan Padmasekara is a fully qualified, fellowship-trained shoulder and upper limb orthopaedic surgeon. Trained in Australia, he specialises in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the upper limb. He offers a comprehensive upper limb service, treating any shoulder, elbow and wrist condition including upper limb trauma. 

Gayan completed his MBBS at Monash University, Melbourne in 2007.  Over the next decade, he completed a Masters of Surgery in Orthopaedics and a Masters of Sports Medicine.  Gayan completed his Orthopaedic training in Victoria with the Australian Orthopaedic Association and became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2019.  He then undertook a sub-specialty fellowship in upper limb surgery with the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group.  

Gayan is actively involved with teaching, holding public appointments with Monash Health and Austin Health.  A keen researcher, he has numerous publications. One of his current research interests includes investigating the cognitive contributors to shoulder symptoms with the goal of improving outcomes to patients with complex shoulder symptoms.  

Locally trained, Gayan is committed to Melbourne’s South East, holding public and private appointments in the area. He believes in treating his patients ethically and compassionately with a patient-centered and evidence-based approach.  

 

Dr Rachel Blackshaw

Orthopaedic Surgeon – Hand & Upper Limb Surgery

Dr Rachel Blackshaw is an Australian Orthopaedic Surgeon, nationally and internationally fellowship trained specialising in all facets of upper limb surgery including wrist, hand, arthroscopy and microsurgery. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and a fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA – FAOrthA).

Rachel earned her MBBS degree in 2006 from The University of Melbourne and has a 1st class honours in Chemistry, BSc(hons) from Monash University. She completed her Orthopaedic training and passed the AOA/RACS Fellowship exam in 2018, becoming a consultant in 2019.

Rachel completed a 12-month Consultant position at Austin Hospital and honed her skills in general trauma and elective upper limb surgery. She then commenced her fellowship at The Melbourne Orthopaedic Group (MOG) completing 6 months advanced training in upper Limb surgery. She spent 18 months in the UK for a fellowship dedicated to hand surgery and peripheral nerve conditions at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham and was also an Honorary fellow at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital for 12 months.

She currently holds a public appointment with Eastern Health at Box Hill and Maroondah Hospitals.

 

Mr Vikram David

Orthopaedic Surgeon – Shoulder and Upper Limb Surgery

Mr Vikram David is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with clinical interest in the management of shoulder problems, trauma, fractures and ailments of the upper limbs.

Vikram completed his orthopaedic training in Victoria, gaining his Orthopaedic Fellowship in 2016. He then worked as a trauma fellow and subsequently went on to complete a subspecialty training fellowship in upper limb surgery in Geelong, followed by a fellowship in Shoulder Surgery at the prestigious Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

Vikram holds public appointments at Monash Health, Eastern Health (Box Hill Hospital) and operates at St John of God Berwick Hospital, and Knox Private Hospital. Consultations are held at his main rooms in Glen Iris also available at Knox Private Hospital and St John of God Berwick Hospital.

Vikram will take referrals for: All shoulder problems including rotator cuff and impingement problems, shoulder instability and dislocations, sports related shoulder problems, AC Joint problems, Frozen shoulder, Shoulder arthritis Common Elbow and wrist problems tennis elbow, golfers elbow, wrist arthritis, general orthopaedic fractures and trauma.

 

Dr Emma Lewis

Orthopaedic Surgeon – Shoulder Upper Limb Surgery

Dr Emma Lewis is a locally trained orthopaedic surgeon with interstate and international fellowships. She offers a comprehensive upper limb service, managing conditions from the wrist to shoulder, including acute traumatic injuries and fractures.

She relocated from Brisbane in 2004 to study medicine at Monash University, graduating in 2009 with her MBBS and an honours research degree. She has since earned a Graduate Diploma of Surgical Anatomy from the University of Melbourne, a Masters of Sports Medicine through the University of Queensland (UQ) and is now engaged in a PhD through UQ focused on tissue engineering options for bone graft. She is committed to advancing her evidence-based practice through teaching and research.

Emma became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in August 2022 and has completed 18 months of sub-speciality training in Queensland and Italy. She is an active member of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. She strives to treat her patients holistically, with the aim to relieve pain and restore function.

Emma sees privately insured, Workcover, TAC and uninsured patients and operates at the following hospitals: Mitcham Private, Mulgrave Private, Ramsay Surgical Centre – Glenferrie and The Avenue Private Hospital.

Outside of work Emma loves to cook, travel and spend time with her husband and two young sons.

 

Mr Shav Rupasinghe

Orthopaedic Surgeon – Shoulder and Upper Limb

Mr Shavantha (Shav) Rupasinghe is a highly experienced Orthopaedic Surgeon who subspecialises in the shoulder and upper limb. Shav consults and operates locally in the north and west of Melbourne.

Mr Rupasinghe attained his medical degree at the University of Auckland and went on to complete his orthopaedic training in New Zealand. He gained his Fellowship at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2018 before working as a qualified surgeon. Subsequently, he pursued three years of sub-specialty training in Sports Surgery in

Bristol UK, Upper Limb Surgery at Wrightington, and Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist, and Hand Surgery at the Hand and Upper Limb Centre in London Ontario (Western University).

Shav has worked with numerous world leaders in the field of upper limb orthopaedic surgery including Dr. George Athwal, Professor Graham King, Mr. Adam Watts, Mr. Mike Hayton and others.

Shav specialises in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of a wide range of conditions affecting the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand.

Shav is known for his personable nature and dedicated approach to patient care. He is highly approachable and is happy to provide any pre- or post-referral advice, as well as assist with any urgent patients.

Monika is our Practice Manager. Monika has over 10 years experience in the health sector and holds a grad dip in Management. She loves working with patients to ensure they are relaxed and informed and have the best possible outcome and are receiving service excellence.
